Stockport County booked a place in the Sky Bet League One Play-Off Final with a commanding 2-0 Semi-Final second leg victory over Stevenage at Edgeley Park, sealing a 3-0 aggregate win and setting up a Wembley showdown next week.
The Hatters made a fast start and took the lead after 14 minutes through Louie Barry, who produced a fine solo effort to curl the ball beyond Filip Marschall. County doubled its advantage before the half-hour mark when Kyle Wootton met Odin Bailey’s cross with a superb acrobatic volley that flew into the top corner via a deflection.
Stevenage responded with greater intent after the break and nearly found a route back into the contest when Charlie Goode’s low strike forced an excellent save from Corey Addai. The County goalkeeper was called into action again moments later to deny Matt Phillips as the visitor searched for a lifeline.
Dave Challinor’s side remained composed throughout and comfortably saw out the closing stages to keep its hopes alive of a return to the second tier for the first time in 24 years.
County will face the winner of Bradford City vs Bolton Wanderers on Sunday 24 May.
