Burgess blushes spared as Swans claim Welsh derby
Australia defender Cameron Burgess was spared some embarrassment after Swansea City came from behind to claim a pulsating Welsh derby in the EFL Championship, beating Wrexham 2-1 after a stoppage-time howler by goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.
Burgess inadvertently directed the ball into his own net on 14 minutes with a thunderous header to put Wrexham ahead and the Socceroos man then fluffed a chance from inside the six-yard box to make amends, sending his attempt high over the crossbar.
Wrexham held the lead through to the break and deep into the second half, but Swansea pushed hard to get level and eventually did so through Zan Vipotnik, whose shot was deflected, wrong-footing Okonkwo on its way into the net on 70 minutes.
With the game seemingly headewd for a draw, seven miutes of added time ensued, and the Swans took full advantage of the extra minutes.
A late free-kick from the deep in the 91st minute saw Ethan Galbraith deliver the ball high into the penalty area and Okonkwo inexplicably came far out of his goal in an attempt to punch it clear.
But he completely misjudged it and the ball was headed back towards goal. Okonkwo made it back to attempt a catch, but completely fumbled it on the line and Adam Idah, who ha come on as a late substitute, was quickest to the ball, poking it home to effectively win the contest.
"More than the result is the way we bounced back and I think that's quite important," Swans boss Vitor Matos said.
"This league is one of the most competitive in the world and that motivated me to come here, as well as the club.
"So far I am enjoying it a lot, and there's a lot of games coming up."
