Spain's second tier of football concluded a thrilling season on Monday (AEST), with four teams set to battle it out for one remaining promotion spot to LaLiga after Racing Santander was crowned champion, claiming an automatic spot alongside second-placed Deportivo La Coruna.
Almería, Malaga, Las Palmas and Awer Mabil's Castellon will play-off for the final place after a tense final day of matches.
Castellon broke Eibar hearts with a 2-1 final-day win over its rival to steal the sixth and final spot, with Mabil absent as he is already on duty with the Australia squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Burgos also missed out despite winning its final game 1-0 against Andorra, but the 72 points it amassed across the season was only enough for seventh place.
Almería will Castellon in one semi-final over two legs, while Malaga and Las Palmas will battle it out in the other semi-final, with the winners playing a final to determine who will join the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid next season.
The play-off system has been in place in Spanish football since 2011 and allows the third promotion spot to be contested by teams that finished third to sixth, using the same format as England's EFL competitions.
The semi-final ties will be played on 7 and 8 June before the return legs take place on 10 and 11 June.
