No Turkish delight for Popovic as Karabukspor set to wield axe
Australian manager Tony Popovic has reportedly been sacked by embattled Turkish Super Lig club Karabukspor, in the wake of its 1-0 Turkish Cup loss to Istanbulspor today.
Turkish media is rife with reports the former Western Sydney Wanderers coach will be informed of his sacking on Friday local time - Saturday (AEST) - having presided over a lean run of results since taking over in October.
After recording a resounding 1-0 win over fourth-placed Kayserispor in his first match in charge, on 14 October, Popovic's team has slumped to seven straight league losses and fallen to last on the table. This morning's elimination from the Turkish Cup is said to have sealed the Australian's fate, with the club expected to inform him of its decision upon his return to the city.
The pending departure of Popovic is the latest upheaval for a club beset by turmoil this season. In mid November the club's entire board resigned.
