Fiji signs off with Uruguay rout
A stadium-record crowed was treated to plenty of entertainment as Fiji ran in seven tries to beat Uruguay 47-15 in Pool A.
Fiji signed off from the Rugby World Cup with a seven-try 47-15 bonus-point victory in an entertaining contest against Uruguay at Stadium MK.
Valiant losses to England, Australia and Wales for Fiji rendered Tuesday's contest a dead-rubber, but John McKee's side heads home with a deserved win under its belt having seen off plucky Uruguay in front a stadium-record 30,048 spectators.
Fiji was awarded two penalty tries either side of a score for Nemia Kenatale, while Leone Nakarawa also crossed the line before half-time.
McKee's men were not always at their best but tries from Tevita Cavubati, Kini Murimurivalu and Nemani Nadolo in the second half showed their superiority.
Uruguay, which plays England on Monday (AEDT), had not scored a World Cup try since coach Pablo Lemoine's effort against England in 2003.
However, Carlos Arboleya ensured that every team at the World Cup has at least one try after crossing the line in the first half and Agustin Ormaechea - who was sent off in the 66th minute - scored a second with a breakaway try after the break.
Uruguay was up against it early when Ormaechea's illegal tackle on Levani Botia earned him a yellow card and Fiji a penalty try, and Kenatale broke off the back of the pack in the ninth minute for Fiji's second try.
Alejo Duran reduced the arrears with a penalty, though, before Arboleya finished a wonderful Uruguay move to spark jubilant scenes as its wait for a World Cup try came to an end.
But Fiji was too strong in the forwards and a collapsed Uruguay scrum led to a second penalty try, and the bonus point arrived shortly before half-time when Nakarawa finished a sweeping move after receiving Nadolo's offload.
Uruguay put in a fantastic defensive effort in the early stages of the second half and its hard work paid dividends in the 58th minute.
Rodrigo Silva showed great football skills to kick and sprint clear and, although a second kick on the floor failed, the ball was recycled and Ormaechea dived over in the left corner.
But it proved a brief reprieve as Cavubati bundled over the line.
Shortly after that Murimurivalu burst clear to score his first World Cup try. A resulting confrontation between the players led to Ormaechea being sent off and Fiji's Campese Ma'afu being sin-binned.
Uruguay battled on, but Fiji had a seventh try with the last play of the game when powerhouse winger Nadolo barged over.
