Mexico held in dour draw, El Salvador cruises
Defending champion Mexico and Jamaica played out a dour goalless draw at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Denver, while El Salvador eased past Curacao 2-0.
Much was expected of the Group C clash on Friday (AEST) – a repeat of the 2015 Gold Cup final which Mexico won 3-1 – but it did not deliver.
In fairness, Mexico was without stars Javier Hernandez, Carlos Vela, Hirving Lozano, Giovani dos Santos and Andres Guardado after the Confederations Cup in Russia.
Erick Torres, however, did come close for the Mexicans, hitting the post in the first half in the only highlight of the match.
The stalemate leaves Mexico and Jamaica level on four points after two matches, a point clear of El Salvador, who beat Curacao 2-0.
Meanwhile, a first-half flurry saw El Salvador dispatch Curacao 2-0 at Invesco Field in Denver on Friday.
Gerson Mayen capped off a slick team move to put El Salvador ahead in the 21st minute, before Rodolfo Zelaya pounced three minutes later to deal double his side's lead.
The second goal deflated Curacao and El Salvador held on for a comfortable win in group C.
