US falls to Nigeria in FIFA U17 World Cup opener
Richie Williams's U17 USA team conceded twice in the second half to lose its U17 FIFA World Cup debut to Nigeria.
United States lost 2-0 to Nigeria in its U17 FIFA World Cup opener in Santiago, Chile.
Five minutes into the second half, Nigeria opened the scoring. Auston Trusty failed to clear a cross from the right side and the loose ball fell to Chukwudi Agor, who slammed it home from close range.
The lead was doubled 10 minutes later, as Victor Osimhen beat the two US centre-backs and slotted home off the post when one-on-one with US goalkeeper Will Pulisic.
Overall, the US only maintained 42 per cent of possession, and while it registered five shots, none were on target. Nigeria took 19 shots and managed six on target.
The US will continue in Group A on Wednesday (AEDT) when it faces Croatia, before closing out against host nation Chile next weekend.
