Rivaldo urges tourists to avoid Rio Olympics
Brazilian football legend Rivaldo warned tourists to stay away from the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro because of increased violence throughout the city.
With the Rio Olympics set to begin in less than 90 days, one Brazilian football great is urging tourists to avoid the global games at all costs.
Famed midfielder and World Cup winner Rivaldo took to Instagram on Monday (AEST) to warn tourists to stay away from the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro due to increased violence throughout the city.
He captioned a photo of 17 year-old Ana Beatriz Pereira Frade, who was fatally shot Sunday (AEST) by gang members while traveling with her family on a main road connecting the international airport with most of the Olympic venues.
"Things are getting uglier here every day," Rivaldo's translated caption read. "I advise everyone with plans to visit Brazil for the Olympics in Rio — to stay home.
"You’ll be putting your life at risk here. This is without even speaking about the state of public hospitals and all the Brazilian political mess. Only God can change the situation in our Brazil."
Just last month, at least 11 people were killed in Rio's impoverished favelas amid police shootings. According to The Sun, the city registered 1,202 murders last year.
Despite growing violence, surging muggings, contaminated water and concerns surrounding the Zika virus, the Olympics are slated to take place from 5-21 August.
