Giuseppe Rossi's Agent Says Player Should've Picked USA Over Italy
Rossi was born in New Jersey and lived in the United States until he was 12, but decided to play his international soccer for Italy.
In comments that will be sure to reopen some old wounds, Giuseppe Rossi's agent has said his client should have opted to play internationally for the United States instead of Italy.
"In hindsight, going back to when he chose between representing Italy or the USA, we should have chosen the USA," Andrea Pastorino told Radio Bruno.
In 2008, Rossi decided to play for the Azzurri instead of his birth nation in a move that still irks some American fans to this day. He made his Italy debut in October 2008 and scored two goals against the USA in the 2009 Confederations Cup.
Rossi opted for the nation of his parents and has been capped 30 times, but hasn't featured in two years after a recurrence of the injury problems that have plagued the last five years of his career.
The 29-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Levante, which was relegated from La Liga. Rossi has one year left on his contract with Fiorentina, and Pastorino wouldn't rule out a return to the Florence-based club.
"I don't think Levante will sign Rossi permanently – that's the impression we've got," Pastorino said. "It's not the kind of transfer a second-division side can make. As for Fiorentina, I can't exclude anything. We need to see what kind of tactics the coach is going to use and see if Rossi is suited to them."
