2016 UTEP Football Team Preview | #BeAMiner

Coach Sean Kugler looking to make UTEP relevant again with new players and coaches.

After a tough 2016 campaign in which they finished 5-7 with a 3-5 conference record, the Miners look to dig themselves out of the bottom of the West Division in Conference USA.

Head coach Sean Kugler will attempt to steer the ship back in the right direction as UTEP have made a few notable staffing changes, including the hiring of Offensive Coordinator Brent Pease and Defensive Coordinator Tom Mason amongst others.

Players to Watch

One of the key players on the offensive end returning to play for the Miners is Junior RB and Team Captain Aaron Jones who had a stellar start to his 2015 season with 32 carries for 209 yards before his campaign ended prematurely after tearing a ligament in his ankle in the second game of the season. He is on the 2016 Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award watch lists.

On defense Junior LB Alvin Jones returns after leading the team in 2015 with 93 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 2 safeties and 14.5 tackles for loss, which was tied for second in Conference USA. Don’t be surprised if the experienced linebacker makes All-Conference honors this season.

UTEP should have plenty of motivation this year as they hope to jump to the top of the division and win their first Conference title since the 2000. They are searching for their first bowl victory in 49 years with their last bowl game triumph coming in 1967. The Miners are excited and have plenty to look forward in the upcoming 2016 campaign.
