The Premier League confirmed on Monday that the sanction imposed on Everton for financial irregularities in the 2021-2022 season has been reduced from ten to six points.

The 'Toffees' appealed the sanction and have succeeded in reducing it by four points, allowing them to move up the table from seventeenth to fifteenth position, with 25 points, five more than the relegation zone.

"Although the club is still digesting the decision of the independent commission - which determined the sanction - we are pleased that the appeal has resulted in a reduction in points," Everton said in a statement.

"We understand that the appeals commission considered the original ten-point deduction imposed as inappropriate when evaluated against the available benchmarks that the club reported to the commission, including the position according to the relevant EFL regulations and the nine-point deduction imposed under the Premier League's own rules in the event of insolvency," it is indicated.

In the same statement, Everton appreciates that the commission's decision that the club did not act in good faith has been overturned.

Everton now faces a second accusation from the Premier League, also for financial irregularities in their accounts, this time from 2019 to 2023.

"The club remains committed to cooperating with the Premier League for the ongoing proceedings for the period ending in June 2023," the Goodison Park outfit pointed out.

In addition to Everton, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City have also been charged, with the latter being attributed 115 financial irregularities.
