With the match between Huachipato (4 points) and The Strongest (3) in Chile looming, which will close out the third round of group play, Estudiantes clings to the top spot with 4 points, while Gremio now sits at 3.
Estudiantes de La Plata started brightly today, creating several scoring opportunities and nearly taking the lead through Colombian winger Edwuin Cetré, but Gremio also threatened on the counterattack, especially with Venezuelan playmaker Yeferson Soteldo.
After a balanced first half, the tone continued in the second. Local striker Javier Correa caused some scares, and the visitors returned the favor with Argentine-born Paraguayan striker Franco Cristaldo.
Porto Alegre's side lost midfielder Matías Villasanti to a second yellow card in the 66th minute.
Renato Gaucho made substitutions, and with the introduction of Nathan Fernandes, they found the winning goal 10 minutes later, in the 76th minute.
