Youzhny decline continues in Umag
Two-time US Open semi-finalist Mikhail Youzhny suffered a demoralising loss at the Croatia Open on Tuesday.
Mikhail Youzhny's ATP World Tour decline reached a new low on Tuesday, when the Russian lost to world number 417 Bastian Trinker at the Croatia Open.
Youzhny, who rose as high as eight in the world, has endured a tough 2015, winning just six of 22 matches - his loss to qualifier Trinker in Umag easily his worst.
Trinker prevailed 2-6 6-3 6-3 over Youzhny, whose ranking of 90th in the world is set to slip even further.
For the 25-year-old Trinker, however, it was a victory to behold - the Austria native earning his first main-draw win on the ATP tour.
Seeds Philipp Kohlschreiber and Borna Coric were untroubled in their first-round match-ups at the ATP 250 hard-court event.
Sixth seed Kohlschreiber eased past Santiago Giraldo 6-3 6-2, while local hope and seventh seed Borna Coric was too good for Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-3.
Martin Klizan, seeded eighth, was pushed to a decider by Pablo Carreno Busta, but came out of the clash a 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (8-10) 6-1 winner.
Damir Dzumhur broke Lukas Rosol's serve five times on his way to a 6-3 6-0 triumph, while Croatian wildcard Toni Androic was no match for Joao Sousa - the Portuguese winning 6-2 6-1.
Paolo Lorenzi won an all-Italian clash over qualifier Matteo Trevisan 1-6 6-2 7-5 - twice coming from a break down in the third set.
Andreas Haider-Maurer joined countryman Trinker in the second round after a 6-3 6-4 win over qualifier Thomas Fabbiano.
