2018 Australian Open- Day 8 Highlights, Live Updates.
Tennys the winner as Djokovic & Thiem bow out of the Aus Open in a dramatic day of action
Seeded stars Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem were dramatically dumped out of the Australian Open on Monday. As ever, we have wrapped all the big talking points from another day of action at Melbourne Park.
Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Australian Open in the fourth round as Hyeon Chung clinically took advantage of the six-time champion's elbow injury to win 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 7-6 (7-3).
The Serbian, who had also struggled with his hip in the third round, was on the back foot from the off and failed to claw back the first set before suffering further at the start of the second.
Djokovic's fighting spirit never wavered, but he could not shake off NextGen champion Chung, who was unrelenting en route to claiming the biggest scalp of his career.
Up next for Chung is the appropriately named Tennys Sandgren who upset Austria's fifth seed Dominic Thiem over five sets to advance to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Monday.
The 97th-ranked Sandgren won 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (7/9), 6-3 in just under four hours to continue his extraordinary run to the last eight. Sandgren becomes just the second man in the last 20 years since Frenchman Nicolas Escude to make the quarter-finals on his Australian Open debut.
Amazingly, the 26-year-old missed out on qualifying in the last four years to reach the main draw in Melbourne. Sandgren beat former winner Stan Wawrinka in the second round and this time eliminated the world No.5.
Tomas Berdych will face a familiar tricky problem after powering past Fabio Fognini into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Monday for a seventh time.
The Czech, seeded 19 and a two-time semi-finalist in Melbourne, put away the 25th seeded Italian 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in 2hr 8min on Margaret Court Arena. Berdych was in little trouble against the maverick Fognini, breaking the Italian's serve six times, hitting 37 winners and offset with 20 unforced errors.
Berdych will face last year’s winner Rodger Federer who sealed his place in a 14th Australian Open quarter-final with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 win against Hungary's Marton Fucsovics in just over two hours.
Simona Halep's pursuit of a maiden grand slam title remains on track after the world number one defeated Naomi Osaka in the fourth round of the Australian Open. A two-time French Open runner-up, Halep reached the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park for the third time thanks to a 6-3 6-2 victory in 79 minutes on Monday.
The Romanian showed no signs of the ankle injury she suffered in the opening round, despite coming off a gruelling marathon against Lauren Davis in her previous tie, an encounter that last three hours and 45 minutes, equalling the record for the most games played (48) in a women's match at the tournament.
Angelique Kerber came from a set and 5-4 down as she saw off Hsieh Su-wei 4-6 7-5 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals. The last remaining grand slam winner in the women's draw, 2016 Australian Open champion Kerber faced elimination at Melbourne Park on Monday, serving to stay in the match against the world number 88.
However three successive games in the second set turned the tide in the Germans favor. The world number 16 showed superior fitness in the final set to outclass Su-Wei 6-2.
