Kwiatkowski denies Sagan in Milan-San Remo
Team Sky rider triumphed in the Milan-San Remo, edging Peter Sagan in the final stretch.
Michal Kwiatkowski edged race favourite Peter Sagan in the final sprint to claim Milan-San Remo victory on Saturday.
Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) led heading towards the finish line on the Via Roma, but was reeled in by Team Sky's Kwiatkowski with just a few metres remaining, despite making a desperate last-gasp dive.
For Kwiatkowski, the victory in Italy marks his second Classics triumph of the season, having also won the Strade Blanche this month.
It is his maiden win in a Monuments event.
An early break was reeled in by the peloton by the Cipressa climb, with Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin then making his bid for the lead.
Having kept close to the front for a long period, Sagan made his move with five kilometres to go, but was followed by Kwiatkowski and Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors).
The trio quickly opened up an 18-second advantage over the chasing pack and, while Sagan initiated the final sprint, he was unable to maintain the pace, losing out to Kwiatkowski in the dying moments.
