Shiffrin to win overall title with Stuhec skipping slalom
Ilka Stuhec will sit out Saturday's slalom in Aspen, meaning Mikaela Shiffrin cannot be caught by anyone at the top of the leaderboard.
Mikaela Shiffrin will win the Alpine Skiing World Cup overall title after it was announced closest Ilka Stuhec will not compete in Saturday's slalom in Aspen.
Shiffrin holds a 198-point advantage over the Slovenian with two races left this season, but Stuhec's decision to skip the next event effectively hands the American her first overall globe.
Stuhec is already assured of second place in the rankings and her personal coach Grega Kostomaj stated exhaustion was behind her decision.
"Now the difference [between Stuhec and Sofia Goggia in third] is so high and we don't need those points," said Kostomaj.
"She's really tired already and it was a long trip around the globe and it's a better decision."
Shiffrin, 22, claimed her fourth slalom globe in five years at Squaw Valley last weekend.
