Ankle injury forces Muguruza out of Hong Kong Open
World number four Garbine Muguruza will not compete at this week's Hong Kong Open due to an ankle injury.
Top seed Garbine Muguruza will not get to the chance to build on her victory at the China Open on Sunday after withdrawing from the Hong Kong Open due to an ankle injury.
The Spaniard claimed her first WTA Premier title in Beijing with a 7-5 6-4 win over Timea Bacsinszky, a result that lifted her to a career-high ranking of four.
However, she had carried the ankle problem throughout the week in the Chinese capital and it has now forced her withdrawal from this week's action in Hong Kong.
"Muguruza suffered a left ankle injury while playing in the Wuhan Open at the beginning of October," tournament organisers announced on Monday.
"The Spaniard carried the injury through last week's China Open in Beijing. She went on to claim the China Open title on Sunday and will now rest the injury ahead of a likely appearance at the season-ending WTA Finals beginning on 25 October.
"Muguruza has a history of ankle issues, with surgery on her right ankle in 2013 forcing her out of the game for the second half of the season."
Muguruza - who reached the Wimbledon final in 2015 - was replaced in the draw by lucky loser Anastasiya Komardina, the Russian beating Chang Kai-chen 6-4 7-5 in the first round on Monday.
