Korean ecstasy as Olympic hosts win speed-skate gold
South Korea's Lee Seung-hoon surged on the last lap to win a tight men's mass start speed skate and send the home fans into ecstasy at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Saturday.
Lee timed his burst to perfection as he held off Belgium's Bart Swings and Koen Verweij of the Netherlands to become the event's inaugural Olympic champion.
The 29-year-old, winner of a record eight World Cup mass starts, punched the air and performed a lap of honour holding the South Korean flag as the crowd cheered.
Earlier Nana Takagi won a furious dash to the line in the women's mass start to claim Japan's fourth gold medal of the Games.
Bleach-blonde South Korean skater Kim Bo-reum bowed her head to the ice after taking silver, ahead of Dutch competitor Irene Schouten in the bronze-medal position.
