Giroud a hero in goal as Milan goes top
Olivier Giroud was a goalkeeping hero after a dramatic finale saw both regular stoppers sent off as AC Milan beat Genoa away to go top of Serie A.
The France stiker, more used to making a name for himself at the other end of the pitch, was forced to wear the gloves after Mike Maignan was shown a straight red for a foul on Caleb Ekuban in the dying moments.
Just minutes prior, Christian Pulisic had put Milan in front as it chased top spot in the wake of Inter Milan's shock draw against Bologna.
But Maignan's foul, which was deemed to have denied a goal-scoring opportunity, had the travelling fans on edge. Genoa hit the post from the resutling free-kick, and very nearly scored an equaliser via a long ball over the top of Milan's defence moments later, but Giroud showed great bravery to rush out and spoil the chance, not once but twice.
From the corner that ensued, Genoa keeper Josep Martinez came up to cause havoc, but ended up seeing red himself for a foul that earned his a second yellow card.
Milan held on to take top spot from its city rival, which had squadered a two-goal lead earlier in the day.
Juventus is third after a clinical victory in the Derby della Mole against its own city rival Torino.
