Messi sets new Clasico record
Lionel Messi set another Clasico record when he scored for the first time in seven matches against Real Madrid.
Barcelona star Lionel Messi is now the highest Clasico goalscorer in LaLiga matches after his double strike against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu on Monday (AEST).
Messi's first goal in the 33rd minute saw him collect Ivan Rakitic's pass and glide past the challenges of Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal before beating Keylor Navas with a low finish from 12 yards.
That was his 15th league goal against Madrid, taking him clear of Alfredo Di Stefano on 14.
His second goal, which won the match, was the last kick of the game and his 500th goal for Barcelona, putting him further out in front with the new record.
The Argentina international was already the top Clasico goalscorer in all competitions coming into the game, with these strikes his 22nd and 23rd in total against Barca's fierce rival.
By finding the net for his first goal, Messi ended the worst goal drought in his Clasico career. He had gone six matches against Madrid without converting prior to Monday's (AEST) fixture.
