It's the Arsenal 'Flop XI' who keep getting signed
For every Arsene Wenger success story, there's one of these guys - the flops who became the subject of ridicule at the Gunners, yet somehow kicked on to carve out a decent enough career elsewhere.
With the ink still drying on Marouane Chamakh's three-month deal at Cardiff City - hot on the heels of fellow ex-Arsenal flop Nicklas Bendtner's return to England with Nottingham Forest - the research team here at beIN SPORTS decided to compile our 'Arsenal Flop XI...who keep getting signed'.
These are the players who arrived at the Emirates amid high hopes and much fan fair only fail miserably, and often comically, under Arsene Wenger. Yet somehow each and every one of them managed to kick on and establish a decent enough career elsewhere.
Manuel Almunia
Despite retiring in 2014, we couldn’t leave Manuel Almunia out of this side. The Spaniard joined the Gunners in 2004 with only a handful of LaLiga appearances under his belt and to the frustration of many Arsenal fans, produced a highlights reel of howlers throughout his eight seasons at the club.
Last spotted: Playing for Watford in the English Championship in 2014.
Sebastien Squillaci
When you look up Arsene Wenger’s worst signings, the French defender features in just about all of them, making a string of high profile blunders throughout his three-year spell at the club.
The 23-time France international now plays for the Cosica national team.
Last spotted: In Ligue 1 playing for Bastia.
Johan Djourou
Promoted from Arsenal’s Youth Academy in 2004, the Switzerland international came with plenty of promise, but only managed to deliver in patches. After Djourou had a couple of loan spells in Germany, Wenger finally decided to cut his losses and released the defender in 2014.
Last spotted: Djourou has since found a new lease on professional football life. He's the captain of Bundesliga club Hamburger SV.
Andre Santos
The Brazil defender earned the ire of Arsenal fans when he infamously swapped shirts with ex-Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie during half time of the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester United. The nail in the coffin was his high-speed police chase where he reached speeds up to 210km/h.
Last spotted: Playing for Boluspor in Turkey’s second division.
Denilson
Eyebrows were raised when Wenger plucked Denilson from Brazil in 2006. The midfieder had five underwhelming seasons in North London, before he was loaned back to former club Sao Paulo with Arsenal unable to find an interested a buyer.
Last spotted: The 28 year-old signed for UAE side Al Wahda in 2015 before being loaned out to Cruzeiro.
Amaury Bischoff
In his own words, Wenger took a huge ‘gamble on talent’ when he signed a 21 year-old Bischoff from Werder Bremen in 2008, for which he'd only made one first team appearance in three years. Managing just one Premier League appearance before he was shipped out, it’s safe to say Wenger's gamble went bust.
Last spotted: SC Prussia Munster in Germany’s third-tier.
Emmanuel Frimpong
Frimpong joined Arsenal’s Youth Academy as a nine year-old and came through the ranks with the likes of Jack Wilshere. Despite making his Premier League debut at 19, ‘Frimmy’ never quite realised his potential and was released in 2014 after a string of loan spells in the Championship.
When he left Arsenal, Frimpong famously tweeted “how am I draw girls now,” before promptly deleting it.
Last spotted: He couldn’t play for the Gunners but Frimpong settled for the next best thing and now plays for FC Arsenal Tula in the Russian Premier League.
Kim Kallstrom
With an injury crisis on his hands Wenger signed Kallstrom on deadline day of the 2014 January transfer window despite discovering a back injury in the Swede’s medical. Kallstrom managed just four appearances in his time at the Emirates.
Last spotted: Playing for Grasshopper CZ in the Swiss Super League.
Park Chu-Young
When Monaco was relegated in 2011, Wenger beat Lille in the race to sign South Korean striker Park Chu Young for $8.9 million. However it was Lille which had the last laugh, Park making one Arsenal appearance in three miserable years before signing for Saudi side Al-Shabab.
Last spotted: Back in the K-League at FC Seoul.
Nicklas Bendtner
How could you leave ‘lord’ Bendter out of this list, he who stole the headlines at Arsenal for all the wrong reasons. He was once famously quoted saying:
"I want to be top scorer in the Premier League, top scorer at the World Cup and, within five years, I want to be among the best strikers in the world. Trust me, it will happen."
Sadly, it didn’t happen and Bendtner’s final contribution in an Arsenal shirt sums it up. He injured his ankle scoring a tap-in against Cardiff.
Last spotted: Battling away in the championship with Nottingham Forest, for which he signed this season.
Marouane Chamakh
There were high hopes for Chamakh when the Moroccan striker bagged 11 goals in his first 22 games, sadly for Arsenal fans that was followed by three in his next 45. Chamakh spent three agonising seasons at the club before he was finally sold.
Last spotted: Just signed for Championship side Cardiff City.
