Injures to Cavani and Mbpappe mar PSG's impressive 4-0 win against Toulouse
Injuries to Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbpappe marred PSG’s first Ligue 1 win of the season after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Toulouse on Sunday evening.
With Cavani limping off early in the first half, and Mbpappe leaving mid-way through the second half clutching his hamstring, Thomas Tuchel will be worried for his star men ahead of their Friday evening clash against Metz and beyond.
PSG started the contest in typical commanding fashion. As Mpabbe quickly clicked into gear, seeing a quick shot saved with the game just minutes old. With fourteen minutes on the clock, Cavani left the pitch with an apparent groin injury.
PSG continued to push in the absence of their Uruguayan attacker, Mpabbe stabbed a shot towards goal, but Baptiste Reynet was equal to the strike. Whilst Reynet was quickly called into action to push away Di Maria’s goalbound corner. With moments left in the second half, Toulouse could have opened the scoring had Max Gradel’s rasping shot not hit the side netting.
Cavani's replacement Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting handed PSG the lead just after half-time with a moment of magic. AS roulette turn in the box before turning the ball home via a deflection from the post.
Five minutes later, PSG doubled their advantage as Mathieu Goncalves haplessly turned in Pablo Sarabia’s cross. Just after the hour mark, Mpabbe left the pitch with an apparent hamstring injury. The Ligue 1 champions asserted their dominance, with Angel Di Maria drilling a free-kick just wide from distance.
Choupo-Moting emphatically grabbed his second of the evening, before Angel Di Maria missed a penalty to make it 4-0. However, the Parisians were not to be denied with Marquinhos heading in a fourth goal of the game on the 83rd minute. Despite the comfortable win, Tuchel will be sweating on the fitness of his key men ahead of sterner tests in the league.
