Fabio Cannavaro appointed Uzbekistan manager
World Cup-winning captain and Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro has been appointed as the new head coach of Uzbekistan, taking charge ahead of the nation’s first-ever World Cup appearance in 2026.
The 52-year-old Italian replaces Timur Kapadze, who guided Uzbekistan to qualification after stepping in for Srecko Katanec midway through the campaign. Under Kapadze, Uzbekistan lost just once in 15 matches and collected 21 points from 10 third-round games - a record that would likely have secured qualification even before the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams.
Cannavaro’s arrival marks the start of a new chapter. His experience, leadership, and tactical discipline promise to complement Uzbekistan’s energetic and technical style.
The former Dinamo Zagreb manager, who left the Croatian club in April 2025 after 14 matches, brings with him a wealth of global experience and a proven winning mentality.
He will be joined by assistant coach Eugenio Albarella, fitness coach Francesco Troise, and goalkeeping coach Antonio Chimenti as Uzbekistan prepare for their historic debut on football’s biggest stage.
