Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in Vancouver.
Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel proved the hero in the shootout, saving Cucho Hernandez's penalty before Ruben Vargas converted the decisive spot-kick to send the Swiss into a last-eight meeting with defending champions Argentina.
The final Round of 16 tie of the tournament was a tightly contested affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances against two disciplined defences.
Colombia threatened first when Gustavo Puerta's curling effort from the edge of the area was brilliantly tipped away by Kobel, while Switzerland responded through Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye, both denied by Camilo Vargas.
The contest remained evenly balanced after the break. Switzerland enjoyed more of the possession, but Colombia looked dangerous on the counter, although Luis Suarez fired wastefully wide with one of their best opportunities.
Extra time finally brought the game to life.
Jhon Lucumi headed against the crossbar from a corner before Kobel produced another outstanding save to deny Jaminton Campaz, while at the other end Camilo Vargas kept out substitute Zeki Amdouni.
Campaz then squandered a golden opportunity to win the match in the closing stages of extra time, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.
After both sides missed from the spot, Kobel produced the decisive save to deny Cucho Hernandez, leaving Ruben Vargas to calmly convert the winning penalty.
Switzerland advance to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 and will face Argentina on Saturday for a place in the last four.
