Spain defeat France 2-0 to reach FIFA World Cup final
Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ final with a commanding 2-0 victory over tournament favourites France on Tuesday, producing a composed display to end Les Bleus' hopes of lifting a third world title.
A first-half penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and a superb Pedro Porro finish after the break sealed victory for the European champions at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, setting up a final against either Argentina or England.
France arrived as favourites after an impressive run to the semi-finals, but Spain's midfield trio of Rodri, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Olmo controlled the contest throughout, neutralising the attacking threat of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise.
Spain's early dominance was rewarded in the 20th minute when Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal inside the box, allowing Oyarzabal to calmly convert from the penalty spot.
France suffered another setback when William Saliba was forced off injured before half-time, while Spain continued to create the better chances, with Dayot Upamecano producing a crucial block to deny Fabian Ruiz.
The decisive second goal arrived in the 58th minute as Porro exchanged a brilliant one-two with Olmo before clipping an excellent finish beyond Mike Maignan.
Lamine Yamal had a third goal ruled out for a marginal offside shortly afterwards, and although Didier Deschamps introduced fresh legs, France struggled to break down Spain's organised defence. Mbappe's best effort was denied by Unai Simon, while the France captain was booked late on as Spain comfortably saw out victory.
