Nuno and West Ham refusing to get carried away despite second straight home win
West Ham coach Nuno Espirito Santo wants his side to remain grounded but still expressed delight at back-to-back home wins for his new club.
West Ham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo says he wants his side to remain focused as they came from behind to defeat Burnley 3-2 and register back-to-back victories for the first time since October 2024.
The Hammers did go behind after Zian Flemming headed home from Leslie Ugochukwu's cross, but they crucially equalised before the end of the first half through Callum Wilson's second goal for the club.
West Ham took the lead with 13 minutes to go as Tomas Soucek bundled the ball home after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka spilled a Lucas Paqueta cross into his path, while Kyle Walker-Peters added another with a rebound after Soucek had let fly from distance.
Josh Cullen pulled a goal back, but West Ham held on for three points and moved level with Burnley on goal difference.
Indeed, West Ham have now won consecutive Premier League games despite conceding the first goal each time (also 3-1 v Newcastle). It's the first time they have done so since December 2014 (vs West Brom and Swansea).
And while Nuno is delighted with the upturn in form, he insists his team have plenty of challenges ahead.
He told BBC Sport: "I am happy for the boys and our fans. This was a massive game for us.
"The goal we conceded, the reaction was good. We have proved we want to change things, we want to be strong characters. The boys on the pitch are showing this slowly.
"I think it's a small step, another day where we have achieved something at London Stadium which means a lot. But we will not get carried away."
Soucek now has 38 goals in the Premier League for the Hammers, moving alongside Patrick Berger as the joint-most for a Czech player in the competition.
He began the match on the bench but still made a telling contribution as a substitute with a goal and an assist, and the midfielder is committed to helping his side in whichever way he can.
He said: "I would love to be starting but I do for the team whatever.
"I am so happy we have won at home, we can go into the international break with a great feeling because we are building something.
"We waited for the first win and then I could see the whole training ground is different. Everyone can see why are building something. It's a really good reflection today, as well.
Burnley boss Scott Parker was left disappointed, believing his side were in with a real chance of victory despite the end result.
"I thought the game was there for us to win," Parker told BBC Sport.
"I felt we could try and change the game from the bench. We've lost the game on two set-plays and then the third goal we were chasing a bit.
Burnley have conceded at least twice in each of their last seven Premier League away games, their longest run since their first 11 on the road in the competition between August 2009 and January 2010, and Parker admits his side's defensive lapses are concerning.
He said: "In crucial moments there was definitely some switching off. We fell a little bit short in certain moments today."
