Luis Enrique savours 'most difficult' Ligue 1 title yet with PSG
Paris Saint-Germain are champions of France for 14th time, having beaten Lens 2-0 to seal the deal with a game to spare.
Luis Enrique said his third Ligue 1 title win in charge of Paris Saint-Germain was the most difficult beyond any doubt, crediting Lens for taking the battle to the penultimate matchday.
PSG only needed a point to mathematically clinch the crown when they faced their closest rivals at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Wednesday, but they took all three with a 2-0 win.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ibrahim Mbaye were on target – the latter after coming off the bench – as PSG wrapped up a fifth successive Ligue 1 crown, and a third under Luis Enrique.
They have now been champions of France 14 times, four more than any other team, while only Lyon – who won seven straight titles from 2002 to 2008 – have ever had a more dominant run in Ligue 1.
And Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich (13) are the only team from Europe's top five leagues to win more domestic league titles than PSG (12) since 2012-13.
But they had to ride their luck at times against Pierre Sage's team, who fired off 25 shots (10 on target) and accumulated 2.57 expected goals (xG) on Wednesday. PSG only had 10 shots (three on target) and 1.09 xG.
Eight saves from goalkeeper Matvey Safonov preserved PSG's clean sheet, and Luis Enrique acknowledged his team had been fortunate in the game – and at other points during the season.
"It was the most difficult of the three, without a doubt, but that's because Lens did a very good job," the Spaniard said.
"I think they deserved more tonight but Safanov was incredible.
"I remember during the season, there were moments when they won big games and a lot of consecutive games, and it was complicated for us."
PSG's title was mathematically clinched on May 13 – of their 14 titles, they have only been crowned on a later date in 2022-23 (May 27) and 2014-15 (May 16).
Lens' positive 15-shot differential against PSG was the joint-best any team has managed against them in a Ligue 1 match during the Qatar Sports Investments Era (since 2011), with Bordeaux matching that feat in March 2015 (22-7 on that occasion).
But Safanov admitted he was helped out by some poor Lens finishing, saying: "I had some luck today.
"If my opponents had put their shots a bit more either side of me, it would have been different."
PSG round out their domestic campaign against neighbours Paris FC on Sunday, then have almost two weeks to prepare for the Champions League final against Arsenal.
