Al-Hilal struck twice in extra time to beat Manchester City 4-3 and book their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.

Pep Guardiola's men struggled to maintain their high levels from the group stage as a slack defensive display cost them in a seven-goal thriller at Camping World Stadium.

For the fourth game in a row, City opened the scoring in the opening 10 minutes, as Rayan Ait-Nouri's cross pinballed into Bernardo Silva's feet, and he turned it in from close range.

Yassine Bounou made impressive saves to keep Al-Hilal in the game, and just 42 seconds after the break, Marcos Leonardo scored his first of the match, guiding a header past Ederson after City had failed to clear their lines.

Malcom then put Al-Hilal in front 52 minutes in, though. Former City defender Joao Cancelo set the Brazilian away in his own half, and he raced into the box before slotting it into the bottom-right corner.

Three minutes later, Erling Haaland poached an equaliser, reacting quickest in the box to turn in from close range after a corner. Manuel Akanji came closest to a normal-time winner, heading against the post in the 84th minute.

But with nothing to separate the teams, Kalidou Koulibaly cushioned a looping header over Ederson four minutes into extra time, though Phil Foden dragged City level again 10 minutes later, volleying a fine finish in from the left of the six-yard box.

But, there would be one last twist as Sergej Milenkovic-Savic's header was pushed straight at Leonardo by Ederson, and he bundled it over the line from one yard out in the 112th minute to set up a meeting with Fluminense in the last eight.

Data Debrief: City's stutter defensively

City only conceded two goals in the group stage of the tournament, with both of those being scored by Juventus in the last game, but they struggled to find their rhythm on Monday.

Al-Hilal scored as many goals against Manchester City tonight as Guardiola's sides had allowed in the first 11 Club World Cup matches he was involved in (four).

The Saudi Pro League side outperformed their 3.16 expected goals (xG) and scored with four of their six shots on target.

But City may feel it was a chance missed as they had 30 attempts overall worth 4.21 xG, with Bounou making 10 saves.
