SportBurst – Is Internet Ready For Cristiano Ronaldo's Mega-Monday?
Ronaldo’s Ballon d’Or, a Champions League record and a manic football Monday across Europe. 5 flu shots into the sneezy arm of sport.
By Tim Stannard
1) Ronaldo expected to win 2016 Ballon d’Or
The egg heads running the internet will be fixing blown gaskets and fizzing pipes of fury on Monday around lunch-time, East Coast posse time, in the States.
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to be announced by 'France Football' as the Ballon d'Or winner for 2016 for being fortuitous enough to be on the same pitch as others who won the Champions League and Euro 2016 for him. Yep, that should get things warmed up.
The giveaway to the expected confirmation of a fourth gong for Ronaldo was the leaking of the magazine front cover featuring the celebrating player, which was a bit of a giveaway, really. The countdown has begun for Team Messi to get their internet warrior muscles primed and ready for a big Monday of tweeting.
2) History repeating for PSG and Barca in Champions League
Well, one record was broken in Monday's Champions League draw. The ceremony clocked in at just 20 minutes, with men in suits removing balls from bowls with admirably alacrity. Real Madrid and Barcelona will be thinking could-have-been-better-could-have-been worse with the Spanish pair drawing Napoli and PSG respectively.
Arsenal look set for another last-16 exit with a clash against Bayern Munich, whilst Leicester City newbies are taking on Sevilla. Atletico Madrid will be chuffed due to the opportunity of a 2-0 aggregate victory over Bayern Leverkusen. Tune into the Locker Room at 7:30PM ET / 4:30PM PT for some spicy views and predictions on the clashes.
3) Pogba v Pogba in Europa League draw
The Europa League draw has thrown up quite the event with Manchester United taking on French outfit, Saint Etienne. Whilst that might not sound immediately exciting, the double-heading in the last 32 tie will put together the Pogba brothers, with Paul’s sibling Florentin on the books of United’s opponents. It’s a “nice thing” said Jose Mourinho on Monday morning, "Paul was already laughing and his brother also,"
4) Atletico look for top four forage in El Madrigal
Harking back a little bit to Atletico Madrid and the Rojiblancos are in action on Monday in a rare big-match on that particular day in La Liga. Atletico have had a sluggish season so far on the domestic front. The challenge for Diego Simeone is by no means a simple one with Villarreal in El Madrigal awaiting. That game is on beIN SPORTS CONNECT from 2:45PM ET / 11:45AM PT.
5) Milan and Roma duel for Serie A second spot
Two teams who will have been looking enviously at the Champions League draw are also in action in Serie A in a Monday that is looking more epic by the minute with second-place Roma hosting third-place Milan at 3PM ET / 12PM PT live on beIN SPORTS. The clash is preceded by Fiorentina against Sassuolo. Mama mia! Catch all the highlights of all Monday's action on the XTRA at 7PM ET / 4PM PT.
