Former Barcelona Scout Reveals How Club Missed Out On Luka Modric
Former Barcelona scout Bojan Krkic Sr has revealed how the club passed on their option to sign Luka Modric.
Former Barcelona scout Bojan Krkic Sr, father of the player Bojan Krkic, has revealed how the club passed on the chance to sign Luka Modric.
Krkic Sr previously worked for Barca as a scout, and in an interview with SER Catalunya explained how the club had the option to sign the Croatian midfielder - but decided against taking it up.
"Modric was a player with a winning mentality, but the club weren’t thinking about the future, only in the short-to-medium-term,” he said, referring to the option Barca had in 2008 on the midfielder.
Krkic Sr also went on to say the club ignored glowing reports on Modric, because they were stacked with players at the time.
“Our contact in Croatia spoke wonders of Modric before he signed for Tottenham. I was working for Barça then and they sent us various DVDs with Dynamo Zagreb and the Croatian national team.”
"The problem is that Barça, during that period, counted on “Xavi, Iniesta, Toure and Busquets [in the B team]. They didn’t contemplate the option of signing.”
It was even revealed by Krkic Sr that Modric travelled to Barcelona to get to know the city with his girlfriend, and a meeting took place in the Hotel Princesa Sofia situated near Camp Nou.
Modric left for Spurs in 2008, and from there he joined Real Madrid in 2012.
