Anastasija Sevastova Can't Beat Pain As Caroline Wozniacki Claims Win And Enters US Open Semi-Finals
Anastasija Sevastova battled an ankle injury as she won just two games in her quarter-final loss to Caroline Wozniacki at the US Open.
Caroline Wozniacki is into yet another US Open semi-final, ending the fairytale run of Anastasija Sevastova with a crushing win on Tuesday.
The Dane, a two-time runner-up at Flushing Meadows, claimed a 6-0 6-2 victory over Sevastova, who battled a right ankle injury.
Unseeded after an average year heading to New York, the win means Wozniacki is into a US Open semi-final for a fifth time.
The last-eight clash at a quiet Arthur Ashe Stadium was rarely a contest, with Wozniacki only challenged in the opening games.
Her good start turned into a 31-minute first-set win, and that included a medical timeout for Sevastova as she required treatment.
In her maiden grand slam quarter-final, Sevastova – who came out of retirement at the start of 2015 – seemed only to continue because of the occasion.
Wozniacki kept her concentration, however, and was ruthless to set up a final-four clash with world number two Angelique Kerber.
Kerber leads their head-to-head 7-5, but Wozniacki holds the upper-hand 5-4 on hard courts.
