Juan Carlos Osorio Trying Out Different Players To Replace Andres Guardado
The Mexico manager is working through his options to replace the midfielder, who is suspended after being sent off in El Tri's Copa America Centenario opener.
Juan Carlos Osorio is trying out five different players to see how he will replace the suspended Andres Guardado, the manager said Wednesday.
"Andres, there are various possibilities. Yesterday we looked at three, today we’ll see the other two," Osorio said at a news conference Wednesday. "We’re not working toward which player will replace Andres, but rather how we can replace him collectively because obviously he’s a very important player, he’s a player with his own characteristics, like Hector, like all the other players. We don’t like to go into these comparisons that realistically don’t have any weight."
Guardado is suspended for Thursday's contest against Jamaica after getting a red card against Uruguay in Mexico's Copa America Centenario opener. Guardado was lucky to stay on the field Sunday in the 26th minute when he was cautioned for a rough tackle but his luck ran out in the second half when he was given a second yellow card and his marching orders. In addition to the suspension, Guardado is carrying a minor ankle injury and reportedly missed training yesterday. He returned to doing drills in the opening portion of Wednesday's session.
The PSV winger is not an easy player for Osorio to replace thanks to his ability to play both on the wings and in the center of midfield. Because of that combination, Osorio is hoping the team pulls together to reinforce the team.
"We try to find the best way to collectively minimize his absence. What worries us the most is the relationship that exists between the player in this position, left-footed hopefully and if not the question mark is if you play a right-footed player there and he has the ability to attack out with with a left-footed player on the right wing. For us, this relationship is very important and it's the top concern."
During the Copa America, Osorio's players have said the manager doesn't give the starting lineups until hours before the match. They'll find out the XI some time before the match kicks off at 10 p.m. ET Thursday.
