Tough Weekend for Conference USA Basketball

  • Old Dominion University
    1/13 Old Dominion (6-4) picked up a 58-46 win over Georgia State (6-4) on Sunday. Sophomore guard Ahmad Caver hit four three pointers to lead the Monarchs in scoring, and finished with 16 points. Caver was the only ODU player in double figures.
  • Conference USA
    2/13 UTSA (3-8) fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-2) 73-69 on Sunday. Senior guard Nick Billingsley scored 13 points off the bench for the Road Runners, a team high. Freshman Byron Frohmen had 12.
  • UAB Blazers
    3/13 A last second tip in from UAB (6-5) guard Chris Cokley iced a 75-74 overtime win over Southern (6-5) on Sunday night. Cokley finished the game with 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Junior forward William Lee finished with 15 points.
  • Louisiana Tech
    4/13 Louisiana Tech (7-4) proved dominant in an 89-55 win over Grambling State (5-7) in Saturday’s Shreveport-Bossier Holiday Classic. Junior guard Jacobi Boykins led all scorers with 24 points. Boykins nailed six three pointers in the game.
  • Charlotte 49ers
    5/13 The Charlotte 49ers (6-4) were overmatched in an 87-46 loss to the Florida Gators (8-3) in the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic on Saturday. Charlotte’s 46 points is their lowest point total of the 2016 season. The 49ers shot 27.5 percent in the game.
  • Conference USA
    6/13 Middle Tennessee (10-2) fell just short in an 80-77 loss to the VCU (8-3) on Saturday. VCU caught fire in the second half, shooting 65 percent from the field. The Blue Raiders had 12 turnovers on the game, versus five for the Rams.
  • Rice
    7/13 Rice (8-3) was edged out by Pittsburgh (9-2) 83-73 on Saturday. The Panthers outrebounded the Owls 32 to 22, but turned the ball over 18 times. Pitt forward Jamel Artis scored a game-high 32 points. The Owls were led in scoring by guard Marcus Jackson.
  • Conference USA
    8/13 The Akron Zips (8-3) beat the Marshall Thundering Herd (6-4) 99-88 on Saturday. The Herd never led once in the contest. Marshall guard Stevie Browning led the Herd in scoring with 31 points. The Herd shot 47.6 percent from the field (30 of 63).
  • North Texas
    9/13 Sam Houston State (8-3) picked up a 76-70 win over North Texas (5-5) on Saturday. North Texas forward Jeremy Combs led the Mean Green in scoring with 13 points.
  • Florida International
    10/13 Florida International (3-9) dropped their fifth consecutive game on Saturday to Northern Illinois (6-5) 60-53. The Panthers pulled within a point of NIU with just over five minutes left in the game. FIU Senior G Donte McGill led the FIU in scoring.
  • Conference USA
    11/13 The UTEP Miners (2-7) dropped their sixth consecutive game in a 76-74 loss to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (3-9) on Saturday. UTEP junior guard Omega Harris scored 22 points on the game, leading all players in scoring. Harris is averaging 17.5 PPG.
  • Western Kentucky University
    12/13 Western Kentucky (4-7) dropped a game to the Detroit Mercy Titans (2-9) 85-79 on Saturday. WKU senior guard Que Johnson lead all Hilltoppers with 20 points on the game. WKU had a tough time containing Detroit G Josh McFolley who hit six of nine from deep.
  • Florida Atlantic University
    13/13 The Florida Atlantic Owls (3-6) fell short against the Miami Hurricanes (8-2) 76-56 on Saturday. The Owls were coming off an upset victory of the Ohio State Buckeyes going into Saturday’s contest, but FAU couldn’t recreate the same magic against Miami.
