There was another high for Dominic Thiem in what is proving to be a stellar year for the Austrian when he beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in the final of the Stuttgart Open on Monday.

Thiem rose to number seven in the world by reaching the semi-finals of the French Open and saw off Roger Federer at the last-four stage on the grass in Stuttgart on Saturday.

And the 22-year-old claimed his fourth title of a fruitful 2016 by seeing off German Kohlschreiber 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-4 in a showdown which finished a day later than scheduled due to rain.

Kohlschreiber led 3-2 in a first-set tie-break when play was suspended on Sunday, but the seventh seed carried on where he left off by wrapping up the breaker in quick time.

Thiem hit back at the start of the second, breaking for the first time in the match and saving two break points when serving for the set before levelling the match.

Just the solitary break in the decider was enough for Thiem to become only the eighth active player - and 29th in the Open Era - to win three tournaments on different surfaces in the same year.
