Berdych keen to put fitness troubles behind him
After being sidelined for a lengthy period at the back end of this year, Tomas Berdych is hoping he can remain fit throughout 2017.
Tomas Berdych is hoping he can stay injury-free throughout 2017, after fitness issues caused frustration for the Czech in the second half of this year.
Berdych reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in July, but was then forced to miss the US Open due to appendicitis - ending his run of 52 consecutive grand slam appearances.
Further appendix problems hampered Berdych at the end of the season and he now sits 10th in the ATP rankings, having briefly dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in more than six years.
"The last season was a very different and difficult season for me, first a change of my coach in the middle then health problems that forced me out of a big part of the season. It is then hard to catch up," he is quoted by The National as saying.
"Also I have been around for a long time and you just can't have all great seasons.
"My body is still in good shape and I love tennis so I am trying to achieve the top goals and enjoy what I am doing.
"I want to have a full season without any injury. That is a base to have a successful year."
Berdych added former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic to his team in August and is optimistic over his future with the Croatian.
"Goran is bringing his experience as a coach and player, and I believe he is the right person for me in this stage of my career," Berdych added.
