Rugby sevens coach Ben Ryan has been awarded Fiji's highest honour after delivering the country's first Olympic medal by taking gold at Rio 2016.

Fiji defeated Great Britain in the inaugural men's sevens final to make national history, and England-born coach Ryan has now been recognised by president Jioji Konrote.

Monday was declared a public holiday to mark the team's achievement, with thousands making full use of free bus travel to make their way to ANZ Stadium in Suva for the celebrations.

Ryan was made a Companion of the Order of Fiji at the event, with Konrote saying: "In recognition of the achievement, it is an honour for me that I have this opportunity to present the country's highest recognition medal award to Ben Ryan.

The triumphant players were all made Officers of the Order of Fiji and, with Ryan, were awarded FJD$30,000 (US$14,700) each.

Ryan is yet to decide where his future lies but is expected to return to England upon the expiry of his contract next month.
