Rio 2016 : Olympic adventure a dream for Knight-Wisdom
As the first male diver from Jamaica to qualify for the Olympics, Yona Knight-Wisdom cannot wait for an "amazing" experience in Brazil.
Yona Knight-Wisdom was planning a jaunt to France to watch the European Championship this year, but the 21-year-old will instead be rubbing shoulders with Usain Bolt in Rio.
Knight-Wisdom made history in February when he became the first male diver from Jamaica to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Born in England with a Jamaican father and a Barbadian mother, Knight-Wisdom was lost for words and reduced to tears when he won silver at the Diving World Cup in Rio - where he had already been assured of a spot in the 3 metre springboard event on the biggest stage of all in August.
After completing the final year of a sports science degree at Leeds Beckett University, the down-to-earth youngster knew training commitments would ensure he missed his graduation.
Knight-Wisdom had also been looking forward to following England's football team in their ultimately brief quest to be crowned European champions.
But as his school friends headed for a jaunt across the English Channel, the City of Leeds Diving Club member found himself preparing for a very different adventure.
In an interview with Omnisport earlier this year, Knight-Wisdom said: "It's a massive achievement for me to come this far and qualify for the Olympic Games for Jamaica, it's just incredible.
"The day after winning a silver medal and qualifying I was getting a lot of media interest. There were requests for interviews with newspapers, radio and television. I have had incredible support, with lots of messages on social media and it is massively appreciated.
"It's been pretty much non-stop for me. I am coaching as well as practicing and being in my final year. It is tough juggling everything, but the diving relates to my studies, so that is a help.
"My graduation is late in July, but I am due to be at a pre-Olympic camp with the British team - as my coach works with them - so I will not be able to attend.
"A lot of friends I was at school with had been discussing plans to go to the Euros in France. They were talking about it so much I was jealous, but what I will experience in Rio is going to be amazing and far better than that."
There will be some football on the agenda during the Olympics, as Knight-Wisdom expects to be discussing Manchester United with legendary sprinter Bolt.
He added: "I met him [Bolt] a couple of times at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
"We are both big Manchester United fans and we talked about that, as well as discussing diving. I have also met him in Jamaica and I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing him again."
While England had to contend with plenty of pre-tournament hype before heading to France, Knight-Wisdom just plans to lap up the experience of becoming the first Jamaican man to dive in the Olympics.
"For me there will be no pressure, I can just go and enjoy it," he said.
"After all the effort that has been put in over the last four years I can enjoy the occasion."
