Springboks to assess injured trio for All Blacks clash
Bismarck du Plessis and Lood de Jager have joined Victor Matfield on South Africa's injury list as they prepare to face New Zealand.
South Africa have injury concerns over Bismarck du Plessis and Lood de Jager ahead of their Rugby World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, while Victor Matfield will also be monitored.
Hooker Du Plessis suffered a hand injury early in Saturday's quarter-final victory over Wales, while lock De Jager damaged his foot.
Veteran lock Matfield was ruled out of the triumph over Warren Gatland's men and the Springboks will assess their walking wounded before taking on the All Blacks at Twickenham next weekend.
South Africa team doctor Craig Roberts said: "Bismarck has a nasty laceration to his right hand. Flo [Francois Louw] accidently stood on his hand – luckily no fracture but it is a bit sore and swollen for him so we will keep an eye on him throughout the week.
"Lood has injured a tendon in his foot so we need to give him some time to see how that settles and we will make a decision later in the week on his availability for the All Blacks game.
"Victor has been doing really well with his rehab, when you're older it takes a lot longer for you to recover. He has been working really hard and progressing nicely but will have to see nearer the end of the week."
Flanker Louw is keeping his fingers crossed that the trio recover in time to face the world champions, but stressed that the Springboks have capable replacements if they are unavailable.
"They are both immense players. Bismarck has really improved and his record speaks for itself. Lood has really stepped up well to that number five position, too," he said.
"He presents himself massively on the field in our defence, he will be a big loss should it go that way and so will Bismarck.
"It is a concern but the Springboks have a lot of depth and that’s vital in a World Cup. Adriaan [Strauss] and Pieter-Steph du Toit can really enter the team should Victor not be ready. We have the players to cover if necessary."
