Lack of experience cost Ireland - Schmidt
Ireland's inexperience was to blame for their Rugby World Cup exit to Argentina, says head coach Joe Schmidt.
Joe Schmidt was left to rue a lack of experience as a poor start saw Ireland crash out of the Rugby World Cup in the quarter-finals after a disappointing 43-20 reverse to Argentina.
Ireland were bidding to make the semi-finals for the first time in their history, but found themselves 17-0 adrift inside 15 minutes at the Millennium Stadium.
Tries from Luke Fitzgerald and Jordi Murphy brought Ireland back into the game and at one stage they were trailing by just three points, only for late scores from Joaquin Tuculet and Juan Imhoff to take the game away from the men in green.
Ireland were without the likes of talismanic captain Paul O'Connell and influential fly-half Jonathan Sexton, and head coach Schmidt acknowledged his team lacked the nous to recover from Argentina's fast start.
"It's very tough to take the final margin because I was incredibly proud of the way the players formed their way back into the game," he said.
"We were a kick away from drawing level and we could have got to 23 all, I think that would have given a bit of confidence to the side we had out there, I think lacking a bit of experience.
"I think at the same time that Argentina bristled with confidence, they bristled with a real physical attitude and made it very difficult for us to get into the game.
"It was the worst possible start and I think that's where you need calm heads, that's where you need your experience and that's where you need, I suppose, a little bit more organisation and they broke down our organisation.
"They played very, very well and you know it's disappointing but I think the next 40 minutes we actually fought our way right back into the game and it's pretty devastating not to have continued with that and actually been in the hunt at the end."
