Guitoune at the double as France see off Romania
Sofiane Guitoune was the star for France in an ultimately routine win over Romania in the Rugby World Cup on Wednesday.
France made it two wins from two in the Rugby World Cup as a Sofiane Guitoune double helped them to a 38-11 bonus-point victory over Romania at London's Olympic Stadium.
Head coach Philippe Saint-Andre made 13 changes from their opening Pool D clash with Italy, which saw France ease to a 32-10 triumph.
The lack of continuity from the first game was evident for much of the encounter as France struggled to break down Romania, who produced a gritty performance fitting of a tournament in which the supposed minnows have performed well.
But Guitoune's brace and scores from Yannick Nyanga Kabasele, Wesley Fofana and Gael Fickou sealed five points for France as they bid to finish top of the group and avoid a potential meeting with holders New Zealand in the quarter-finals.
An early Morgan Parra penalty gave France a 3-0 lead after Romania had been pinged for offside, but Romania looked to have crossed for the game's first try when Florin Vlaicu went over after good work from the forwards.
However, the TMO ruled Vlaicu had failed to ground the ball, leaving the centre to settle for a close-range penalty after France had strayed offside in the earlier passage of play.
Another indiscretion from Saint-Andre's men provided Vlaicu with the chance to give Romania the advantage, but his second three-point attempt sailed off target.
Romania's challenge was made harder when Paulica Ion was sin-binned for illegally halting a French drive from the line-out.
And France instantly took advantage as wing Guitoune touched down in the right-hand corner, with Nyanga Kabasele then adding a second try after Brice Dulin's break had stretched the depleted Romania defence.
Vlaicu took advantage of some sloppy play at the break down - an area where the three-time finalists consistently struggled - to convert his second penalty just before half-time.
A furious Saint-Andre was pictured giving his side a passionate team-talk during the interval, but his words looked to have fallen on deaf ears as France continued to display a lack of fluency after the restart.
But in the 65th minute Guitoune muscled his way past several defenders to score his second, which was awarded despite suspicion of a double movement.
The impressive Dulin then slipped centre Fofana through for the all-important fourth try before Romania powered over for a deserved consolation through Valentin Ursache.
But there was one last flourish from France, Fickou cleverly stepping his way to the line to add some gloss to the final score.
