Elliot and Tupou lead Roosters to rout of Sea Eagles
Talismanic showings from the two Sydney Roosters wingers boosted their hopes of a third straight NRL Minor Premiership.
Wingers Brendan Elliot and Daniel Tupou each scored hat-tricks as Sydney Roosters hammered Manly Sea Eagles 46-10 on Friday to stay on pace to win the NRL Minor Premiership.
Having seen Brisbane Broncos cruise to a 47-12 victory against defending champions South Sydney Rabbitohs on Thursday, the Roosters turned in a similarly emphatic success away from home at Brookvale Oval on an emotional night for the home side, whose hopes of a place in the play-offs look to be all but over.
The game served as the final one at Brookvale for Sea Eagles head coach Geoff Toovey – who is to be replaced by Trent Barrett at the end of the season - and Parramatta Eels-bound stand-off Kieran Foran.
But a ruthless Rooters side had no room for sentiment as they raced into a 16-0 lead inside 30 minutes thanks an Elliot double and an Aidan Guerra try.
Captain Jamie Lyon – who later left the field due to injury – crossed in the corner to narrow the gap to 10 points at the interval, only for Elliot to benefit from more slick ball handling from the Roosters backline and seal his treble three minutes after the restart.
Tupou collected a high kick to cross for his first and then added a fine long-range effort before Tom Symonds stemmed the tide somewhat with a consolation score for Manly.
But further gloss was added to the scoreline as Tupou completed a 16-minute hat-trick and Isaac Liu completed the rout two minutes from time.
The result means the Sea Eagles will be eliminated from top-eight contention should St George-Illawarra Dragons beat Gold Coast Titans on Sunday. By contrast, the Roosters lead the Broncos on points difference with one game to play.
