Wire-to-wire triumph gives Fitzpatrick first professional win
An excellent showing on the back nine allowed Matthew Fitzpatrick to hold on at the British Masters and claim his first professional win.
Matthew Fitzpatrick completed a wire-to-wire victory at the British Masters to claim his first European Tour title.
The Englishman had at least held a share of the lead in every round at Woburn and - despite being the youngest player in the field at 21 - displayed composure to hold off the challenge from the likes of Soren Kjeldsen to triumph.
Fitzpatrick produced a three-under-par 68 on his final round to finish on 15 under, winning by two shots from Kjeldsen, Shane Lowry and Fabrizio Zanotti at a tournament restored to the calendar after a seven-year absence.
A bogey at the third was immediately atoned for as Fitzpatrick birdied the fourth. Kjeldsen and Zanotti also made gains on that hole and did so again on the seventh and ninth to make the turn two clear of Fitzpatrick.
But Fitzpatrick's fortunes turned on the back nine as the rookie rose to the challenge laid down by that pair with four birdies and just one bogey.
Fitzpatrick made back-to-back gains at the 11th and 12th courtesy of two excellent approach shots to move back into a share of the lead.
Consecutive bogeys from Zanotti on 13 and 14 dented his hopes, while Kjeldsen three-putted to make par on the 15th, with Fitzpatrick immediately capitalising on that missed opportunity as he birdied the same hole despite finding the sand off the tee.
Kjeldsen could not recover from hitting his tee shot on 16 into the trees and was forced to settle for a bogey that handed Fitzpatrick a two-shot lead.
Zanotti surged back into contention with gains on 16 and 17. However, Fitzpatrick also shot two on the penultimate hole to preserve a two-stroke advantage and go three ahead of Lowry, who also birdied 17.
A bogey on the last proved immaterial as Zanotti also dropped a shot, sealing the £500,000 purse for Fitzpatrick.
