Siddle confident Australia can handle Starc absence
After Mitchell Starc suffered a stress fracture on day one in Adelaide, Peter Siddle says Australia can cope without their strike bowler.
Peter Siddle is confident Australia's bowling attack can fill the void left by Mitchell Starc after the pace bowler suffered a stress fracture in his right foot.
Starc had taken 3-24 on day one of the third Test against New Zealand in Adelaide when he was forced off the field with the injury, scans later confirming a stress fracture in the third metatarsal.
That will mean the 25-year-old will not bowl again in the match, but Cricket Australia confirmed he will still bat if required.
His absence leaves Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh and Siddle as the pace options for Steve Smith, while Nathan Lyon will provide his usual off-spin over the remaining four days.
"It's obviously very disappointing," said Siddle after Australia dismissed the tourists for 202 before closing on 54-2.
"He [Starc] was bowling so well and has been bowling well for a very long time.
"You never want one of your team-mates to go down, especially so early on, [but] we've got enough bowling in our line-up anyway to take the 10 wickets required, so I think we'll be fine.
"But it's very disappointing for him. He has been on fire and I think he showed that again today – even with a bit of pain, he could get the job done and get those few breakthroughs for us in the middle order.
"We know Starcy – he'll be back. It's a nice little rest for him. It's not a bad thing for him at this time of the year. I think he will be back firing in no time at all."
