Shiffrin closes in on slalom record with Semmering success
FIS Alpine World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin has won every slalom race this season, and one more will earn her a place in the history books.
Mikaela Shiffrin became just the third woman in FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup history to win a seventh successive slalom race in Semmering on Thursday.
Shiffrin produced a combined time of one minute and 40.06 seconds to beat Veronika Velez Zuzulova (+0.64secs) and Wendy Holdener (+01.54secs) to first place.
The 21-year-old American - who made up nine tenths in the final section to triumph - is now one victory away from matching the discipline's longest winning streak held by Vreni Schneider and Janica Kostelic.
It was Shiffrin's third triumph in as many days in Semmering having come first in the giant slalom races on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"That's pretty incredible. [It was a] good day," she said in a post-race television interview.
"At every gate I thought I was giving it away, but starting to fight feels really good.
"Today [Wednesday] I think was harder [than the two giant slalom races], I was just tired. But it's amazing."
Shiffrin now holds a 215-point lead over defending champion Lara Gut in the overall rankings and possesses a 110-point advantage in the slalom standings.
