Shiffrin atones for fall with slalom victory
Defending champion Mikaela Shiffrin stormed to victory in the opening slalom race of the season by over three seconds in Aspen.
Mikaela Shiffrin atoned for her late fall in Friday's FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup giant slalom with a dominant victory 24 hours later in the slalom.
The 20-year-old American tumbled in sight of the finish line in the first race of the weekend in Aspen to hand victory to Lara Gut, but she made no such mistake in cruising to success by over three seconds from Veronika Velez Zuzulova.
Shriffin – the defending champion in the discipline – was fastest after the opening slalom run of the season, negotiating the 60 gates in 48.01secs, holding just over a second's advantage to Zuzulova.
And she more than doubled her lead on the second run with a faultless display to clock a combined time on one minute 39.81secs.
Behind the American the battle for a podium place was intense with Sarka Strachova (+3.88secs) nudged out of the top three by Sweden's Frida Hansdotter (+3.26secs).
Maria Pietilae-Holmner had taken the lead late on with an impressive run to knock Sara Hector off the summit, but the Swede was made to settle for fifth as the final four racers all surged past her time.
