Scherzer throws second no-hitter of season
Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer struck out 17 batters as he recorded his second no-hitter of the MLB season.
Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer finished an otherwise disappointing season with a stunning no-hitter against the New York Mets on Saturday.
Scherzer struck out 17 batters in the 2-0 win, including nine of his the last 10 at Citi Field.
Only one Mets batter reached base in the game and it came when Yunel Escobar committed a fielding error in the sixth inning.
Scherzer, who signed a seven-year, $210million deal with the Nats in the off-season, finished 2015 with an 14-12 record and a 2.79 ERA.
He no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates in June.
Scherzer’s gem was the seventh no-hitter in the majors this season.
He become the first pitcher in MLB history to throw two no-hitters without giving up a walk.
The Nats ace becomes only the second pitcher since 1900 to strikeout 17 batters in a no-hitter, tying Nolan Ryan's July 15, 1973 performance.
