Rick Porcello is yet to throw a regular season pitch for the Boston Red Sox, but the pitcher finalised a four-year contract extension on Monday.

Porcello's new deal is worth $82.5 million, according to the Boston Globe, with the Red Sox announcing the advancement on MLB's opening day.

The Red Sox traded Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to the Tigers for Porcello during the off-season. 

The 26-year-old right-hander has a 76-63 win-loss record in his career with a 4.30 earned run average.

Those stats were compiled, largely, at the pitcher-friendly Comerica Park, but Porcello will be pitching in the smaller confines of Fenway Park and a tough Boston crowd. 

The sinker-ball pitcher should benefit from a better defensive unit, both in the infield and outfield.

Porcello is scheduled to make his first start in a Red Sox uniform on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies.
