Five in a row the target for Lorenzo at unpredictable Assen
All eyes are fixed on Jorge Lorenzo after four race wins on the bounce as the MotoGP bandwagon arrives in Netherlands.
Jorge Lorenzo has sounded a note of caution to his rivals that his Yamaha will take some beating at this weekend's Netherlands Grand Prix, but history suggests to expect the unexpected at unpredictable Assen.
The Spaniard is in the form of his MotoGP career after four race victories in a row – a feat he has never previously achieved - moved him to within a point of championship leader and team-mate Valentino Rossi.
But extending that hot streak in the Dutch TT will be tricky, given that a different rider has topped the podium in each of the previous five years, with Lorenzo's last Netherlands win coming back in 2010.
The weather, as Lorenzo is quick point out, also adds another layer of intrigue.
"Assen is maybe one of my two or three favourite tracks," said the two-time MotoGP world champion.
"The circuit is so fast and I love some of the high-speed corners there.
"I arrive in a very good shape. The bike is performing really well and I think Assen will suit us perfectly, but you never know.
"The forecast in Holland is always unpredictable so we need to wait and see if it‘s going to rain as usual or not."
Roll the clock back 12 months and defending world champion Marc Marquez was triumphant in the Netherlands, making it eight race wins from eight at the start of the 2014 season.
That form is in stark contrast to the Honda rider's 2015 campaign, Marquez crashing out of the last two races and managing just one victory this year to sit 69 points adrift of Rossi.
It is Rossi who Marquez will need to emulate if he is to become the first rider to win back-to-back Dutch TTs since the Italian did so in 2004 and 2005.
The Rossi renaissance at the age of 36 shows no sign of fading as the six-time world champion has enjoyed a podium finish in each of the last 11 races.
"Assen will be another very intense weekend," said Rossi.
"It won't be easy because Jorge is in a great shape, but so am I."
