Russian Grand Prix: What they said
Lewis Hamilton is on the brink of the Formula One drivers' championship following his win in Sochi, here we look at the paddock reaction.
There was a familiar victor at the Russian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton capitalised on a retirement by team-mate Nico Rosberg to win and put himself on the brink of a second straight Formula One world title.
Rosberg had started on pole but was forced to retire after a throttle issue allowed Hamilton to swoop past and take a lead that he never looked like surrendering as he moved above Ayrton Senna with 42 Grand Prix victories.
Sebastian Vettel was second for Ferrari with Sergio Perez third in the Force India after he benefited from a last-lap crash involving Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen.
Ferrari's Raikkonen was demoted from fifth to eighth after being handed a 30-second penalty for his part in the collision with Williams driver Bottas, a sanction that ensured the constructors' title for Mercedes.
Hamilton needs to finish 10 points ahead of Vettel and three clear of Rosberg at the United States Grand Prix to claim the championship, but refused to declare the title race over.
"I've never felt it's ever been done and dusted. There are still a lot of points available. I'm going to take my time and, at the next race, work as hard as ever." – Hamilton on claims the title race is over.
"It [the retirement] has made it more difficult, of course, but I am never going to win it anyway with such normal things like that [the throttle] breaking. But of course I will keep pushing and keep attacking." – Rosberg refuses to concede the title.
"I hope [this signals a title fight next year] – that's our target. We want to be a bit better in the race and make sure we give some really good challenge to the Mercedes. Currently, they are still a bit ahead, but I think we're doing a very good job, focusing on ourselves and gaining step by step, getting a bit closer. I think we are in a good direction." – Vettel hopes his second-place finish is a sign of things to come in 2016.
"I don't know, for me it was racing. I tried to pass and unfortunately it ended up like this, but I'm not the stewards." – Raikkonen, speaking before being sanctioned by the stewards, plays down his crash with Bottas.
"I don't think it was a racing incident. I didn't see anyone there and I was in front and then suddenly someone hits me. I should be on the podium, but I'm here with zero points instead. That's just disappointing." – Bottas, who was forced to retire, disputes Raikkonen's account of events.
"If you look at my performance, you can see I'm going through the best moment in my career." – Perez revels in his podium finish.
"When I saw it coming I knew it was going to be a good hit. I released the steering wheel, made my muscles strong, closed my eyes and waited for it to be over." – Lotus' Romain Grosjean relives his heavy lap-13 crash at turn three.
