Magnificent Muguruza beats Williams to claim French Open title
Garbine Muguruza became the first Spanish woman to win the French Open since 1998 by gaining revenge over Serena Williams.
Garbine Muguruza won her first grand-slam title with a magnificent straight-sets victory over Serena Williams in the French Open final to keep the world number one waiting for an elusive record-equalling 22nd major crown.
Muguruza was beaten by Williams in her first grand-slam final at Wimbledon last year, but gained revenge with a magnificent 7-5 6-4 triumph on Court Philippe Chatrier to become the first Spanish woman to win on the hallowed clay since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1998.
Defending champion Williams has failed to add to her incredible haul of 21 grand slam titles since beating Muguruza in south west London 11 months ago and must now turn her attention to drawing level with Steffi Graf's Open-era record on the Centre Court grass next month.
World number four Muguruza, who was only eight when Williams won the first of her three titles at Roland Garros, combined power with style in a ruthless display and there will surely be more to come from the Venezuela-born 22-year-old.
Top seed Williams was troubled by a muscle injury during her semi-final victory over Kiki Bertens, but did not appear to be overly hampered in her fourth match in as many days and was beaten at her own game by the magnificent Muguruza.
Williams made an assured start, moving freely and striking the ball with brute force, but the fourth seed stood firm to save two break points in a lengthy fourth game.
It was the sprightly Muguruza who took the upper hand, racing into a 40-0 lead in the next game and securing the first break when Williams coughed up a double fault.
The pair continued to trade punches from the baseline and Williams hit back to get the first set back on serve to level at 4-4 when Muguruza belted a backhand long.
Muguruza looked very much at home on the big stage and took a 6-5 lead after Williams was unable to return a rasping backhand before showing great resolve to save two break points as she served out the set.
Williams was up against it in the second set when she trailed 3-1 after being broken twice and Muguruza was unwavering as she refused to relinquish her advantage.
Muguruza failed to win four match points at 5-4 on the Williams serve, but showed nerves of steel by serving out the match to love and dropped to the famous clay after sending a lob onto the baseline to dethrone the American.
